Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Dioecious trees up to 30 m tall and 2 m in diameter, bark pale brown, rough and scaly, lenticels abundant, whitish, shoots glabrous, sapwood reddish brown, heartwood black.

Stems: Trunk 2 m in diameter, bark pale brown, rough and scaly, lenticels abundant, whitish, shoots glabrous, sapwood reddish brown, heartwood black. Sap watery.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate–elliptic, 4–14 cm long, 2–9 cm wide. Apex acute. Base truncate to rounded or oblique. Surfaces glabrous, blades thin, chartaceous; upper surfaces green; lower surfaces pale green, glaucous. Margins entire. Pinnately veined. Petioles 0.5–2 cm long. Stipules present, deltate, 2–3 cm long, with laciniate–ciliate margins.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary clusters; staminate flowers on pedicels 3–4 mm long; pistillate flowers on pedicels 5–14 mm long. Flowers unisexual (and the plants dioecious or rarely monoecious), actinomorphic. Calyx of staminate flowers with 5 sepals; sepals green with brownish tips, somewhat spatulate, 1.5–2 mm long, with erose–laciniate margins. Calyx of pistillate flowers with 5 sepals; sepals unequal, 1–2.5 mm long, outer ones ascending with acute apices, inner ones spreading and spatulate with laciniate margins. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens in staminate flower (3)4–7, alternate with the lobes of floral disk; filaments ca. 1 mm long; anthers 1–1.5 mm long, basifixed staminodes absent in pistillate flowers. Ovary superior, on a hypogynous disk, (2)3(4)-carpellate; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous; styles distinct and 2-lobed or stigmas sessile staminate flower pistillode conical, ca. 0.3 mm long pistillate flower ovary 2.5–3 mm long, globose; stigmas sessile, 2-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit reddish brown to black; juicy; globose; 3–6 mm in diameter; subtended by persistent sepals; borne on pedicels 5–20 mm long. Seeds 2 per cell; slightly curved; 2–4 mm long; ca. 1 mm wide; ± triangular in cross section; seed coat with deep subhilar invagination; embryo embedded in endosperm.
